Background Information

The main objectives of the United Space Alliance (USA)/MAES Pre-engineering Scholarship Program are: to alleviate some of the financial burden caused by undergraduate tuition costs, to increase the number of minority students in engineering, math, and science fields, and to heighten their awareness of careers within USA .  It is hoped that this scholarship award will be of utmost consequence in these pursuits, and that students will achieve significant accomplishments in their personal and academic activities.  In order to accomplish this objective, MAES will conduct outreach activities geared towards reaching America ’s diverse population. USA/MAES will provide 10 high school seniors with scholarships of $2,500 each during the 2007 USA/MAES Pre-engineering Scholarship Program.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does “Pre-engineering” mean?

Pre-engineering means that you intend to pursue a degree in engineering, math, or science once you enroll in a college or university.

What does “USA” stand for?

“USA” is an acronym for the United Space Alliance, one of the world’s leading space operations companies.  Established in 1996 as a joint venture between the Boeing Company and Lockheed Martin Corporation, USA employs people in three principal locations: Texas, Florida, and Alabama.

What does “MAES” stand for?

“MAES” is an acronym for the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists, Inc., which was founded in 1974 to increase the number of Mexican Americans and other Hispanics in the technical and scientific fields.  MAES boasts student and professional chapters throughout the United States.

I am not a MAES member.  Am I eligible to apply?

We understand that you will not have had the opportunity to join MAES, as most high schools do not have MAES student chapters, and it is not a factor in the selection processes.  However, we strongly encourage you to join one or more of the many minority engineering societies once you begin college, as they will serve as a great resource and support network for you.

Who is eligible to apply.

Any minority student who plans to register for pre-science, pre-engineering, or pre-math studies in college that is currently classified as a senior in high school.

What does “original application” refer to?

The “original application” refers to the actual scholarship application signed by the applicant, in addition to the essay, transcript, and letter of recommendation.  Applicants must submit the original application package, plus three photocopied sets of the entire application package.

What exactly is an “official transcript?”

An official transcript is a documentation of your class grades during high school.  They are usually given by the school’s counseling department and will have the school’s official stamp or seal.  Official transcripts usually include the signature from a high-ranking school official such as the principal or administrator.   Sometimes, the transcripts will be in a closed envelope that states, “Official only if unopened.”  However, for our purposes, official transcripts may be opened by the applicant in order to prepare the application package photocopies.

What should my transcript cover?

The application MUST have the most recent transcript available from your high school.  The transcript should include grades for all four years of high school.  THIS MUST BE IN BY THE FEBRUARY 28th DEADLINE.   Applicants will need to request an official transcript from the high school well before the application deadline.

How many scholarships are available?

There are ten scholarships currently available to seniors who are graduating in 2007.

When will I find out if I’ve been selected to receive a scholarship?

The Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES) has put together a selection committee that will review all the applications during March and early April.  Our hope is to notify all applicants of their selection or non-selection status no later than April 14, 2007.

Who should write my letters of recommendation*?

You are required to have at least one letter of recommendation from a teacher at your high school or person who can provide a relevant recommendation.  Examples of relevant recommendations include:  advisors, employers, or supervisors who can speak of your relevant experience/credentials/academic potential, etc.  Keep in mind that recommendations should address your academic qualifications.

*NOTE:  It is preferred that the recommendations be sent in by the applicant with their original application package and photocopies.  However, letters of recommendation (and 3 copies) can be mailed directly to the MAES Scholarship Committee if the authors desire to keep the contents of the letter private.

How are the applications screened and what is the basis for selection?

The selection committee reviews all applicants separately and privately.  The committee is looking for four basic aspects of the application (in no particular order): financial status, community involvement, academic performance, and written communication skills.  These four categories are scored separately and the final decision is based on a point-system, with the higher scoring applications given first priority.

Is this scholarship renewable?

Currently, this scholarship is NOT renewable.  The current program is open only to graduating seniors, and scholarships are awarded on a one-time-basis.

I just found out about the Pre-engineering Scholarship and it is past the deadline…can I still apply?

Unfortunately, the answer is no.  We will not accept any late applications and there are no exceptions.  In order to process all applications, review them, and notify all applicants in a timely manner, we must strictly adhere to all deadlines.
