Over the past two years MAES Houston has ushered in additional leaders, new members from the University of Houston, other MAES universities and local companies. Over the last three years we have administered a $25,000 scholarship program for college bound high school student in Houston, Alabama and Florida. The scholarship program is made possible by he United Space Alliance.
Recent chapter accomplishments
One of our members, Rodolfo Gonzalez, has been recognized as a 2008 Houston Young Engineer of the year. Rodolfo is an aerospace engineer working at NASA and has devoted countless hours over the past ten years supporting the Hispanic community. Please click here to see Rodolfo's Young Engineer of the Year biography. Please join us in congratulating Rodolfo for this accomplishment.
We are now in partnership with the Houston Community College as part of a Hispanic leadership program. This program will provide a two year scholarship to high potential high school grads. The intention is to provide a structured environment and graceful transition into a four year University. Please contact MAES President if you know of high potential students that might benefit from this type of program.
Our professional chapter works closely with the University of Houston over the past few decades. We just facilitated a leadership and strategic planning retreat with ten of the student leaders from the University of Houston. The event was sponsored by Hewlett-Packard. We walked them through advanced leadership and teamwork skills. We also helped them to establish five year goals and one year objectives. These newly elected student leaders are extremely sharp.
We have also been engaged with Jefferson Davis high school over the past three years. Starting in January there is an intense six week design and build phase. Our deadline to ship the robot is February 19th. We typically spend six days a week with the high school students at Jefferson Davis building a robot for the FIRST national competition. Our annual budget includes a scholarship line items for college bound high school seniors. Please contact MAES President if you are interested in getting involved or becoming a sponsor.
MAES Mission
The Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES) is a non-profit tax-exempt organization founded in 1974 for the purpose of increasing the number of Mexican Americans and other Hispanics in the technical and scientific fields. Originally, the focus of MAES was on the professions, but as the organization grew, so did the scope of its activities and interests. MAES now represents the Mexican American and Hispanic community in the all-important technological arena on issues related to education, economics, environment and research. As a mature organization with an international membership representing all the engineering and scientific disciplines, MAES now has turned its focus on the youth of our people. Many of its programs, with the financial help of members, companies, and government agencies, are now directed at increasing the number of students at all grade levels who will study and prepare to enter our technical professions.
